How to clean sterling silver at home?
There are many options to use for cleaning your sterling silver with home cleaning solutions:
Soap and water
Polish your silver jewelry to keep it looking like new using a mild dish soap and toothbrush. Simply fill a bowl with warm water and a few drops of the mild soap, dip the brush, and gently scrub the silver jewelry. Rinse with a second bowl of warm water, then dry with a soft towel or cloth. Ensure you use a mild, ammonia- and phosphate-free dish soap for this.
Olive oil and lemon juice
This silver polishing solution is easy to use and will provide your silver objects with a gleaming shine. Simply mix one teaspoon of olive oil with half a cup (120mL) of lemon juice in a non-reactive bowl, then dip a soft, non-abrasive cloth in the solution and polish the silver. Lastly, rinse the silver with clean water and dry with a clean cloth.
Commercial silver cleaners
Silver cleaners can be a powerful tool for keeping your silver jewelry and antiques looking new, but require careful handling. Many commercial silver cleaners contain dangerous chemicals and should only be used in well-ventilated areas. Furthermore, they may damage sterling silver, as they might remove anti-tarnish coatings or patina so make sure to take the necessary precautions.
Avoid scrubbing silver with baking soda or toothpaste
Don’t scrub your silver with baking soda or toothpaste because the baking soda can cause scratches and damage the surface. Protect your silver from damage with appropriate cleaning methods.
